Objects – Gizem, Esra, Çiğdem, Burcu, 2014, acrylic on canvas, 95 x 125 cm
The portraits in the “Objects” Series are based on student photographs taken from school yearbooks dating from various periods. The series was conceived as an archaeology of generations and ruptures. Interventions such as cutting, pasting, and scraping applied to the ID-style photographs found in these yearbooks create layers and overlapping transitions between the portraits. Addressing various aspects of the curriculum, the construction of generations, indexing, accumulation, memory, uniforms, and the gaze, the series constitutes one of the pillars of the broader framework encompassing the artist’s other works on subjects such as “total institutions” and “the construction of generations.”
