Galata Greek School is one of the long-established and modern educational institutions founded in response to developments at the beginning of the twentieth century. Located in Galata, one of Istanbul’s oldest districts, the school was designed in the Neoclassical architectural style. Due to demographic changes, it suspended its educational activities in 1988. Once filled with the voices of children but left silent for many years, the school building was returned to Istanbul’s Greek community in 2012..
Since 2012, Galata Greek School has hosted numerous cultural events. While preserving its historical heritage and, above all, its Greek identity and cultural legacy, it aims to embrace a wide range of cultural identities and traditions. By creating a perspective extending from the past to the present and from the present into the future, the school seeks to become a cultural, artistic, and educational space that welcomes all of Istanbul.
In this respect, Galata Greek School, one of Istanbul’s most independent spaces for culture, art, exchange, and education, opens its doors to all creative minds and projects that are distinguished, experimental, and free. It aims to research and transform the history, memory, and future of both the school and the city through a contemporary language.
